Acts 5 : The Gospel Package

Book of Acts: The Gospel Package

We have been doing a study from the book of Acts and past few weeks we had some special Sundays were we did not continue , now we are in Acts 5

Let us read the Acts 5:

Ananias and Sapphira

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”

“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”

Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

The Apostles Heal Many

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

The Apostles Persecuted

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”

21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.

When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.

27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”

29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Before we deep dive we need to understand the background. This book is a New Testament book which is written after the death of Jesus Christ after the church was formed and the outpouring of the Holy spirit . This all events were recorded after Jesus said it is finished , I have paid it all. There is no more blood to be shed.

The Sinfulness of Man:

Chapter 5 starts with this

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of propertyWith his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

They also sold a property, that means someone else as well sold the property.

Just before this chapter, in ACTS 4 last verses we see someone else doing the same .

36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.

So someone called Joseph decided to sell a field and he brought that money at Apostles feet.

After they saw the great generosity of Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37), Ananias and Sapphira decided to do the same.

But there was a problem

With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

They sold the possession, and gave only a portion to the church, while implying that they sacrificially gave it all to the church.

His wife also being aware of it: Clearly, both husband and wife were partners in the deception. They both wanted the image of great generosity, without actually being remarkably generous.

“Once the love of money takes possession of a person, there is no evil that he cannot or will not do.”

Submission, what if the wife may have said No and she disagreed the entire plan. But the husband said no , if anyone asks you have to say this is the amount. What do you think whether she was correct ?

The Sinfulness of Man (Ananias and Saphira)

Hypocrisy : (They are not the people they are showing off to others. They were not generous at all)

Receive Respect / Appreciation: (They desired respect, status in the society)

The contempt of God : (Did not care about God, worthless)

Deception: They thought now one will be aware of . They tried to deceive God, people and the Church.

Here we the sinfulness of Man, we are not talking about Ananias and Saphira but it is us. You & Me.

I talked it before , This incidents all happened after the Jesus Ascension . After the curse of Sin was broken, After the great revival of the Church , after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

But still we fall because we are in a fallen state. And we need God everyday.

Their sin is imitated in many ways today. We can create or allow the impression that we are people of Bible reading or prayer when we are not. We can create or allow the impression that we have it all together when we do not. We can exaggerate our spiritual accomplishments or effectiveness to appear something we are not. It is too easy to be happy with the image of spirituality without the reality of spiritual life.

The Holiness of God:

We need to know that our God is Holy. Just a small lie challenges his holiness. A small lie tests God?

Peter says , You have not lied to human beings but to God.

There was no fear , reverence for God in their life.

We should always keep a check on us , like “I cant do this , my God will not like this

Peter also says, You tested God. So with our every unpleasing act which challenges God’s holiness , we are testing God.

Ok, let me put me another way. There was one Bible character who lied thrice ? Who was he? Why he did not face God’s Judgement?

Exodus 33:19b

I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

“I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy” means God’s freedom to demonstrate mercy is not limited by anything but His own divine choice.

If we think God’s judgment is too harsh, then we underestimate the holiness of God. We can underestimate the holiness of God. In the words we speak? In the things we look at? In the things we do? In how we worship?

The Grace of God :

Let us read from verse 12

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

One thing really was amazed was the response of the apostles and the Church . Such a big setback for the church and them but they way the responded to this crisis was amazing , the next verse says they performed miracle, wonders, healing.

I see here the Grace of God, I was Just thinking about those sick people, those who had been tormented by the impure spirit.

God chooses to heal them, they would have been suffering for days, months, years. God choose to give them a new life. People who been in sick bed for years, that was the bible says, people who have been struggling with sickness. God chooses to give them new life.

Just before this we saw that , the Judgement / Wrath of God but just the next verses we see a compassionate God, loving God, He showed Grace.

Ezekiel 18:23

23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

He does not want anyone to die but everyone to live.

The Power of God :

They have been arrested but put it in Jail But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”

We see the great power of God, The angel appears and opens the door for them. God fighting for them not them. It was all God.

34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.

38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”

Such a powerful statement , If it is by Human wisdom , it will fail but if it from God no one will be able to Stop. And you will only find yourselves fighting against God. No one cant stand against the Power of God.

40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

They flogged them but it does not affect them. The power of God works in our lives, it is not US our achievement , It is God. Even When we suffer , we need to believe in the Power of God.

When we look at the cross , we need to see all these , our sinfulness, Holiness of God, Grace of God & the Power of God.

Last slide put everything together and tell that only this is applicable , no.. everything is applicable and it is the truth.
